In the middle of December competition, A Tribe Called Judah excels, grossing over N220 million in its first week.
A Tribe Called Judah, co-directed by Funke Akindele and Adeoluwa Owu, debuted in 73 theaters across Nigeria. In just seven days, the comedy title has raised over N200 million, proving once again that Funke Akindele is a box office queen.
A Tribe Called Judah was released on December 15, 2023, to positive reviews, by Funke Akindele through her production firm, Funke Akindele Network, after her previous box office hit, Battle on Buka Street, debuted on December 16, 2022.
In this comedic film, a family who is about to loot a mall discovers that armed robbers are already inside. Prelaunch sales for A Tribe Called Judah, which starred Funke Akindele, Jide Kene Achufusi, Boma Akpore, Fathia Balogun, Timini Egbuson, Yvonne Jegede, Tobi Makinde, Geneveva Umeh, Ibrahim Yekini, and numerous more actors, totaled N9.41 million.
The movie made N113.97 million its first weekend, knocking director Kayode Kasum’s Afamefuna from the top spot. However, in the first seven days, the title brought in N228.17 million. In addition to its advanced screening sales, it has made N237.98 million thus far.

Last weekend, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which was boxed for N9.32 million, received an advanced showing. On December 22, the film made its debut at theaters.
3. Wonka
The movie, which debuted last week, made N6.71 million in its first weekend after opening with N15.80 million.
2. Ada Omo Daddy
The drama-thriller, which was written by Yakubu Olawale and co-directed by Kazim S. Adeoti, Mercy Aigbe, and Akay Mason, made N47.69 million in its debut at the box office. The sales during the weekend totaled N27.70 million.

Funke Akindele, the filmmaker behind the two biggest cinema office hits, Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020) and Battle on Buka Street (2022), is co-director and producer of A Tribe Called Judah.
Omo Ghetto: The Saga broke box office records when it was released in Nigeria following the lockdown that kept moviegoers confined to their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever. The Wedding Party, which had occupied the top slot since 2016, was replaced by the movie. Omo Ghetto: The Saga brought in N124.17 million on its first weekend. By the end of that week, it would have earned N270.31 million in total. Following its whole theatrical run, the movie brought in N636.12 million.
While Funke Akindele’s breakthrough triumph in the Nigerian film industry with Omo Ghetto: The Saga was noteworthy, nobody anticipated that the movie’s reign as the top pick would not be as long-lasting as that of its predecessor.
Battle on Buka Street, a film that Funke Akindele co-directed with Tobi Makinde, debuted on December 16th. The movie would eventually become Nigeria’s highest-grossing movie with N668.42 million. The first weekend of sales brought in N43.99 million. But in just seven days, it brought in N86.63 million. Despite having lower first-week box office numbers than Omo Ghetto: The Saga, this movie eventually surpassed it to become Nigeria’s highest-grossing picture.
At the box office, December is a very competitive month, and this is not implausible. This is the season when most people go to the movies. The Christmas and New Year holidays are mostly to blame for this.
